Four Simple Steps for a Decor Refresh

When we consider refreshing a space in our home, it’s easy to know that we want something different. However, figuring out precisely what that is and how to execute it doesn’t follow suit. Oftentimes when decorating a space, it helps to start with a focus piece, something you love, and pull inspiration for colors and textures from it. Using these four steps as building blocks will help get a jump start on that refresh you’ve been mulling over!

1. Determine a color palette for your room. Whether you want to keep your wall color neutral or go bold with a pop of color, you can use your chosen accent piece, like the rug, to help you pull inspiration for the perfect shades of paint.

 2. Find an accent piece in the color palette you have in mind. It should be something you love; after all, you’re building your entire room around it! It can be a pillow, rug, throw, wall decor, etc. If you’re choosing to keep your walls neutral, the accent piece is a great place to “take a risk” since it’s easily changeable and a fun way to make a statement and add personality to your space. {Decorator Tip: Deep, saturated colors in small pieces promote a more cozy and inviting feeling. Light, neutral colors brighten up the area to give a more simple and fresh atmosphere.}

 3. Pull inspiration for a design style from this piece before shopping for the rest of your room. (Click here to determine your design style.) Look for a mix of neutrals, patterns, and textures in other decor pieces that play off your focus piece, complementing but not taking away from your original building block.

4. Consider keeping investment pieces, like couches and other large furniture items, more neutral. Chairs and ottomans that envelop your chosen design style are fun but limiting; refreshing your space the next time can be as simple as finding a new accent piece and building with it instead of starting from scratch.
